South African shops in Melbourne: where to buy wors, biltong and Mrs Balls

Looking for a South African shop Melbourne can offer? Here is the short answer. The two walk-in grocery shops to know are The South African Shop, with stores in Templestowe and Caulfield South, and Protea Foods, which has a factory store in Cheltenham that sells fresh boerewors (the coiled South African farm sausage). Tony’s Quality Meat covers the south-east and the west with a full South African range, and Bushman Meats delivers across the metro area. Melbourne has more choice than most cities, but the shops do different jobs.

Every address, phone number and trading time below comes from the shop’s own website, checked on 20 October 2026. Where a shop does not publish its hours, we say so. Shops change their hours without telling anyone, so ring ahead before a long drive. Our national directory of South African shops in Australia is the hub; this page goes deeper on Melbourne.

South African shop Melbourne: the east and the inner south-east

The South African Shop, Templestowe. Unit 8, 112 James Street, Templestowe VIC 3106. Phone (03) 9846 8322. Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm, Sunday 10am to 2pm. This is the grocery stop. It sells imported South African foods such as rusks, Willards Flings and chocolate, plus imported wine and spirits, and it makes its own biltong, boerewors, stokkies (thin biltong sticks) and droëwors (the thin, dry, spiced sausage you snack on). The biltong is made in-house from a family recipe. The website says the shop makes boerewors but does not say whether it is sold fresh or frozen, so ask at the counter.

The South African Shop, Caulfield South. 461 Hawthorn Road, Caulfield South VIC 3162. Phone (03) 9523 7633. Open every day, 10am to 4pm. Same range as Templestowe, and the only confirmed shop here that trades seven days with the same hours, which helps if you are planning a Sunday braai on the fly.

Bayside and the south: wors and biltong makers

Protea Foods, Cheltenham. 6 McGuire Street, Cheltenham VIC 3192. Phone 0422 776 832. Monday to Saturday 10am to 2pm. The website does not list Sunday hours. Protea makes biltong sticks, sliced biltong, stokkies and droëwors, and its boerewors is sold fresh at the Cheltenham factory store. That is a clear answer for anyone asking where to get fresh wors, and the short Saturday window of 10am to 2pm means you need to plan your morning. Protea products are also sold at selected Coles, Woolworths, IGA and Foodworks stores, and its site has a “Where to Buy” page to find a stockist.

Tony’s Quality Meat, Moorabbin and Point Cook. Factory 1, 291 Wickham Road, Moorabbin VIC 3189, and Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Centre, 300 Point Cook Road, Point Cook VIC 3030, at the Kmart entrance. Phone (03) 9555 7887. Tony’s is a butcher with a long South African range: boerewors (including cheese and lamb versions), biltong, droëwors, samoosas, stokkies, rusks, spices, sauces and sweets. Its main page does not list trading hours but links to a locations page, so check there or call. For anyone in the western suburbs, Point Cook is the nearest of the shops confirmed on this page.

What each shop is good for

A quick guide, so you pick the right South African shop Melbourne has for the job:

  • A full grocery run in one trip: The South African Shop at Templestowe or Caulfield South.
  • Fresh boerewors from a factory store: Protea Foods in Cheltenham, Monday to Saturday.
  • Wors with cheese or lamb, plus groceries: Tony’s, at Moorabbin or Point Cook.
  • Sunday shopping: The South African Shop, which opens at both stores on Sunday.
  • Delivered to the door: Bushman Meats, or The South African Shop for same-day orders.

If you are comparing makers rather than shops, see best biltong in Australia. For wors across the country, our guide to where to buy boerewors in Australia has a Melbourne section too.

Delivery in and around Melbourne

If the nearest shop is a long drive, several of these businesses will bring it to you. The South African Shop offers same-day local delivery for orders placed before 11am, regular and express parcel post, and local pick-up for orders placed before 2pm, usually ready within 24 hours. Bushman Meats says it delivers in metro Melbourne, Ballarat and Bendigo, and marks many items as available by Australia Post. Its website does not give a shop address, phone number or hours, only an email, so it is an online option. Protea Foods says delivery is available across Australia, and Tony’s says it now delivers nationwide. Check each site for fees and times. Parcels that go by post can be tracked through Australia Post.

Once you have your wors, our guide to how to braai boerewors takes you from coil to coals. If the shelf is bare on something like Mrs Balls chutney, our Mrs Balls chutney substitute guide has the swaps, and the wider South African ingredient substitutes guide covers the rest.

Still checking

These details are not confirmed on the shops’ own websites this week, so we have not guessed.

  • Tony’s Quality Meat trading hours. They sit on a separate locations page that we could not read.
  • Bushman Meats shop details. No address, phone number or hours are published.
  • SilvaSide Biltong kiosks. The South African Shop’s site names kiosks at HighPoint, Doncaster Westfield, Westfield Fountain Gate and Forest Hill The Chase, but gives no hours, so check before you go.

If you know any of these shops well, tell us and we will update the page.
